Frequently Asked Questions

What is TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat is a long-lasting, durable, self-cleaning and deodorizing photocatalytic surface coating. It is clear when applied properly andworks with light to safely keep surfaces cleaner and deodorized. This unique coating protects everything ALL surfaces it is applied to.

How does TiCoat® Work?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat is a ceramic photocatalyst coating that uses light, oxygen and water in the air to actively clean and deodorize surfaces.

What is a Photocatalyst?

A photocatalyst is a material which absorbs light to bring it to a higher energy level, which then provides such energy to a reacting substance to make a reaction occur. This is what makes the TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat a self-cleaning and deodorizing product.

What types of surface contaminants does TiCoat® work on?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat cleans and deodorizes inanimate surface contaminants (e.g., fingerprints, dirt, smog, grease, smoke, perspiration, urine) that contact its surface. In addition, the ceramic coating has non-stick properties that help it protect surfaces from all types of returning stains.

What Color is TiCoat®?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat is a water-based product that originally is a yellowish-white, translucent liquid that dries to a clear coating after application to surfaces.

What can TiCoat® be Applied to?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat can be used on interior and exterior surfaces including non-porous and porous surfaces such as metals, plastics, glass, wood, painted & stained surfaces, cement, stucco, fabrics and more.

How Long Does TiCoat® Last and Remain Active?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat is designed to last as long as the surface it is applied to and can only be removed abrasively or chemically and will remain active as long as it is exposed to light, water and oxygen.

Will it Work Indoors and Without Sunlight?

Yes. TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat contains a special photocatalyst that works indoors with all visible light sources, like today’s LED lights. It only needs light to work.

Is it Safe?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat is safe for both humans and animals. The coating does not transfer from surfaces to the environment.

Do You Provide Safety Data Sheets (SDS)?

Yes. They are available to download on the TiCoat® website.

How Many Times Does it have to be Applied?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat is applied once. It is continuously effective over time. It is only reapplied when it is abrasively or chemically removed or the surface is painted/covered over.

Who Can Apply TiCoat®?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat is fast and easy to apply. Application is completed by Certified Installers that are available regionally. If your organization has staff or a preferred service provider TiCoat® can readily arrange for certification training. The process consists of both classroom and hands on training, which typically takes a single day.

What Type of Equipment is Needed for Application?

An air compressor connected to a TiCoat® approved HVLP spray cup gun using a 1-millimeter spray nozzle. Please contact TiCoat® for specific details on equipment and training program.

Do Surfaces Need to be Cleaned First?

Yes. Cleaning is recommended before application. The coating binds to the surfaces to protect that surface from future contaminants, so the appearance before will be how it looks after application.

How Long Does it Take to Dry?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat dries in only a few minutes. It is applied as a fine mist that is mostly water creating a uniform thin ceramic coating on the surface. High traffic areas should be allowed to dry at least 12-24 hours prior to use as the coating develops better adhesion to surfaces over time.

How Many Coats are Needed?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat is sprayed onto the surface in three layers using different patterns to provide an even coating on the surface. This application method provides for the most effective active coating resulting in a clear and transparent appearance.

Where to buy?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat is available directly through TiCoat® approved sales associates and certified installers. Please consult the https://www.ticoat.com/contactus for more information.

How is TiCoat® Packaged?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat product is available in one-gallon containers, four gallons to a boxed carton.

What is the Coverage?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat coverage is dependent on the surface. On a non-porous surface, like painted surfaces, a gallon is estimated to cover approximately 4,500 square feet of surface area. On a porous surface, such as raw concrete or brick, a gallon is estimated to cover approximately 2,500 square feet of surface area.

Limited Warranty?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat has a two-year shelf-life warranty. Independent Certified Installers provide the installation of the product at point of use.

Care Instructions After Installation?

Clean treated surfaces with your preferred green cleaner, water and a soft microfiber cloth, sponge or paper towel is recommended. Abrasive pads or tools are not advised. Use of strong chlorides, acids or bleaches are not essential.

Why Hasn’t This Product Been Used Before in the US?

TiCoat, Inc. has reengineered and reimagined this coating technology from Japan. The process and visible light activated formulation is proprietary to TiCoat®. The market is now driving the practical uses of the science.

Who Owns TiCoat®?

TiCoat® is a wholly owned and operated United States manufacturer. See the web page www.ticoat.com for additional information.

Where is TiCoat® Made?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat is 100% manufactured in the United States at our dedicated facility located in North Windham, Connecticut.

Will TiCoat® Discolor Surfaces?

The coating is clear on application and is not known to discolor most surfaces. Only bare copper and silver was shown to tarnish / oxidize upon application of the TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat, so should be avoided. If there is any question be sure to do a test area first.

Does TiCoat® Give Off VOC’s?

TiCoat® Surface Protect™ Topcoat is a water-based product that does not produce any VOC’s or SVOC’s.

Will TiCoat® Help with Graffiti?

Graffiti is often an inorganic paint material that may not be clear in appearance. However, the uses of acid pens have become more widespread as a graffiti method. Testing confirms that TiCoat® acts as a self-sacrificing surface protectant where the coating is impacted by the acid while the tile surface below remained undamaged. In this case, the affected areas can be readily cleaned and touched up with TiCoat® for ongoing protection.

Will TiCoat® Work on the Hull of a Boat?

The boat hull application has not been properly evaluated as the coating requires light, water and oxygen to work. However, the areas above the water line should be improved as the coating does protects surfaces from the environment.

Can TiCoat® be Sprayed on Computer Keyboards?

Yes, the mist is applied in a very thin layer. Be sure the device is disconnected prior to application.

Can TiCoat® be Spayed on Touchscreens?

Yes, the mist is applied in a very thin layer. Be sure the device is disconnected prior to application.

Will TiCoat® Cause Static Electricity on Electronics?

Testing has shown no evidence of a static build up on treated surfaces.

How does TiCoat® Benefit Solar Panels?

Contaminants in the air stick to solar panels, clouding the panels that reduces efficiency. TiCoat® continuously cleans the surface, allowing wind and rain to clear most deposits keeping the solar panels at peak efficiency longer.

How Much Does it Cost?

Pricing is based on the specific application. It is exceptionally cost effective and dramatically reduces the use of expensive and toxic cleaners that must be continuously reapplied. Please contact us at www.ticoat.com to get a quote for your application.
